Deep Sea Mining:
Deep-Sea Mining is aimed to extract valuable metal rich rocks and may damage Underwater Ecosystems for decades.
Microbe communities live in the sea floors.
The lumps of rock, known as Polymetallic or Manganese Nodules, containing economically important metals such as Copper, Nickel and Cobalt.
To recover the nodules, miners dredge the seafloor, scraping off much of the top layer of sediment along with the rocks.
It causes the effects of Deep-Sea Mining on the Ocean Environment and particularly on the Microbes at the base of the Food Web, which cycle the nutrient Nitrogen between Seafloor and bottom waters.
Presently, South China Sea is the most disputed by China with its neighbors. Bcz,China wants its abundant presence in the sea. It has Economic Importance due to having huge quantity of Mineral Nodules.
Due to slow accumulation of sediments in the deep sea, regions disturbed by mining could take more than 50 years to fully recover.
So needs of careful seafloor mining scientifically without disturbing the ecosystems therein. Bcz,directly and indirectly we depend on the ecosystems and impact on our lives.
